If these dudes had an 8-bit synthesizer they’d be called ROSHAMBO the Band. I’ve always found the adjective battering appropriate for bands like Dickkicker. You know! It’s that incandescent fuzzy guitar tone that exfoliates the pores and rattles the skin stretched against the skull. This Tallahassee trio integrates a heaping helping of hardcore punk into their vocals ultimately authoring a face smashing juxtaposition of stoned solid and pissed right the fuck off. Think of The End as a caustic and utterly dissatisfied reaction the earth crumbling beneath your feet. Each hulking riff: the shifting of the plates. Drum patterns: the pace at which one digests their own demise. If you are privy to bands like Refused or Pg.99 for vocals, and don’t have any personal hangups that prevent you from banging face to stoney bands like Kyuss or Orange Goblin: then DK should tickle you beat red. If they don’t, I’m positive the coughing fit set to ensue somewhere during your listening experience will. By the way, this digital EP is available on their Bandcamp page for NAME YOUR PRICE.

Round two for new music Tuesday! HALMOS originates in the extensive Atlanta stoner metal scene, and I was supposed to support them with my band in Fire in the Cave here in Orlando until unforeseen setbacks occurred and they announced a rescheduling of their assault on O-town. I have a soft spot in my heart for duos because I’m a big fan of more for less. Halmos rides torrential waves of unwashed stoner rock reminiscent of Sleep one moment and Olde Growth the next. Expect to clean the complimentary fuzz out of your ears, and make sure you have at least twenty Q-tips handy. Vocally one can expect a scattered sequence of masculine tribal grunts and Red Fang style refrains. While these two only seldom stray from the good ‘ol mid-tempo their half time variations will compel yet another round of heinous herbal inhalation. Want to know the best part about the Vicious Cycle EP? It’s god damn free!
On a slightly related note, Halmos have an upcoming show with the putrid doomers in Windhand and an upstart post-metal act called Canopy who features Jesse Borsella of my former band Bad Actor.

ASG is one of those bands that can tear me out of my seat regardless of surroundings, much like the way Earth did as I sat glued to the silent Panthers broadcast during their 2-1 victory over Vancouver last night. Just now, I had to control the urge to begin the charge up and down the aisles of my office. Sadly, academia frowns on such behavior despite it’s invigorating consequences, so I came to blog about it. Like a nerd.
ASG recently signed a deal with Relapse Records and immediately cascaded into a series of south eastern dates with a variety of different lineups. I know Brevard county’s Octopoid slew ‘alongside the sludge rock bulldozer last Friday, and if history stands consistent I’m sure much fun was had amongst the surely congested oceans of ass shaking occurring. Brevard county seems to be known for their incapable ability to shake it to even the most jarring new Willenium metalcore, and even ASG.
But this Wednesday they’re joined by the veteran Delando denizens: Junior Bruce. The bruce dudes recently signed to A389 Records for their debut LP. I personally have some guest vocals on that record, and I can attest to it’s gritty and smothering presentation. We’ll have a review coming for that one later this week. The lineup is also joined by Lakelando post-metallers Portals and the triple guitar southern metal onslaught to be unleashed by King Hippo.
There’s more. If you show up before 9pm you’ll get to partake in a wonderful art show at Will’s Pub organized by Noah Howell entitled Consilence.
Here’s the flier, click it for a link to the Facebook event for more info. Sorry that King Hippo isn’t on the flier!

I recently shared a delightful series of e-mails with members of the Bostonian stoney metal quartet The Proselyte. This interview is a highly personal look into the lives of these four mega furious musicians:
So being that you’re located in Boston what would you say are some of the best facets your city has to offer to you as a self proclaimed “post-grunge” band?
“post grunge” was something we were described as by a kid at a show. We all liked it. There’s a strange obsession with various eras of music from the pacific northwest within our camp so we let it stick. Albums like Mudhoney’s Superfuzz Bigmuff really helped me decide what a guitar should sound like. In Boston I’d say we benefit from the presence of an enormous quantity of talented heavy bands, and that’s not a recent development either.
Hah! Looks like you’ve pioneered your own last.fm tag. What heavy bands would you say are the most pivotal to the scene in Boston today?
That totally depends on one’s definition of pivotal. What’s pivotal to me in the local bands I admire is that they are making something new. I’m into locals like Western Syndrome, Furnace, Razormaze, Ramming Speed, Finisher, Lunglust, and Riff Cannon, as well as the staples like Converge, Cave In and Jonah Jenkins is doing some really cool stuff with Rawradarwar.
That’s quite the diverse list. I recently noticed that you guys entitled your newest release Sunshine. What’s the significance behind the title? Is it the cause of death for the flies stuck to that 400 year old fly paper on the cover?
After shows, folks would mention that they dug the accapella part in the song “Slaw”, which is where the album title is taken from. That just always stuck in my mind. Plus, the subject matter of most of the songs is fairly dark. So we figured, juxtapositioning and all that, name the album Sunshine. Oooooo irony.
Literary devices in metal, just how I like it! Going on lyrical content are their any major influences, either lyrical or literary, that your content stems from or is it mostly stoned introspection?
Definitely a great deal of literary influences. This was the first time we all sat down with many of the instrumental demos and wrote as a band. It ended up a convergence of everything we had been reading and reading about. Stuff like Lovecraft, Philip K Dick, books about whaling. Really whatever had been on our coffee tables at the time.
Would any of you consider yourselves professional whalers? If not, what types of recreation to you all enjoy? Smoking pot and watching Jerry Springer counts as recreation.
No whalers unfortunately. All of us really enjoy cooking. In fact on tour we often cook for the folks that put us up. Brad has always been the tech guy in the camp. He fixes everything for me and the majority of my pedals are his creations. Smoking pot is definitely up there as well. Haha!
Now that you’ve mentioned food you’ve got me wondering. What is the signature Proselyte dish? Also, if you guys were to have a burger at Kuma’s Corner what would it consist of?
A signature dish would be hard to pull off. We’ve got Brad who is a veggie and Mitch who won’t eat anything but lean rare meat and protein shakes. I guess if we were to have a burger made in our honor it would be a veggie burger with a regular burger on top of it. Alec would like rice and beans while I would like lots of fried things. We would then have to pick off what we don’t like.
All of that sounds delectable. I’m out of questions, so is there anything else you’d like published with the interview? A declaration of war perhaps?
We are preparing a split 7″ with Flyingsnakes and will hopefully be hitting the road with them late spring.

Dickkicker
East of the Wall
Thanks to Chip of Ether for not only playing a terrifyingly heavy set alongside his companions, but for delivering video of two bands following load out. MVP right there.

King Hippo
I caught the set of this beefy metal assault a few months back. It was intense and relentless. King Hippo throws their weight around putting together heavy grooves and strong leads that makes for a great performance. Click here to listen to a demo track by King Hippo.
Hellbender
I’m excited to see this psychedelic quartet after listening to their latest release Cosmolux. Hellbenders brand of fuzzed out rock-n-roll packs a groovy punch. With spacey solos and a classic lo -fi sound it’s sure to catch your attention. Click here to listen to Hellbender on their Facebook.
Octopoid
I didn’t have anything to listen to online but this is Octopoids debut show. We need fresh blood in the scene so everyone come bang your head and welcome these newcomers.
Fire In The Cave
These heavy hitters are stepping up to take the place of the injured Swamp Ruins. With a sound and presence that’s terrifying I expect another brutal performance. Click here to check out Fire in the Cave’s one audible video.
