MetalGF Reviews Meshuggah & Baroness Live by endlessgonzo

Cross posting this because it’s always nice to see a show review, and especially one from someone not normally into metal.

When I first arrived I thought every guy was Vince. They all had his uniform on and I literally went to hug one or two bearded fellows before stopping myself just in time. I didn’t think Vince had a “Battlestar Galactica” t-shirt! Wait, I was right, he doesn’t have that shirt BECAUSE THAT’S NOT HIM! I just went to kiss a stranger who I now realize looks like a modern version of our 16th President. This is a sea of white men in black t-shirts like the (non-metal) world has never seen. There are no girls, no black people and no items of colored clothing in sight. I stick out like a sore thumb in my white bohemian top and blatant womanhood.

You know how at every show there is the one super psyched guy? He or she is always a row or two in front of me feeling the music in their deepest of souls and moving their bodies in a way only they understand. I remember I went to an Indigo Girls concert in the 1990s and there was a hundred pound girl dancing and singing and yelling with an enthusiasm known only to the superfan. Well, at Meshuggah superfans were everywhere. They are such a loved band. I had the feeling people had been waiting for this night for weeks, maybe months.

Technical Thrashers HEXEN Post New Track by orlandooom407

Tuesday gets a thrash attack from LA based thrash band HEXEN. They posted a new song last night on the Pulverised Records Soundcloud page. The track is entitled Stream of Unconsciousness and while the pun remains timid the song itself runs a bit more wild. Here’s the official verbiage:

“Los Angeles progressive thrashers HEXEN have officially released a sample track from their forthcoming new full-length, Being And Nothingness set for North American released through Pulverised Records on July 17, 2012.

Recorded, mixed, and mastered at Vivid Tone Recording Studio (Lividity, Guthrie Govan, etc.) by producer Rich Bruce.”

Struck By Lightning – True Predation by endlessgonzo

Alright, time to kick off a new month filled with great metal and sounds heavy enough to blot out the springtime sun. When I wasn’t wringing my hands over my fantasy baseball team (Cliff Lee with a pulled butt muscle? Shoot me now), I was perusing some of the fresh harvest of full lengths that are getting ready to hit your ghetto blasters/car stereos/mpfree players. Among the releases that stuck out to me was Struck By Lightning’s newest full-length, True Predation. In case anyone didn’t hear their previous release Serpents (and shame of fucking shames on you if you didn’t), Struck is a band fronted by Gregory Lahm of Mouth of the Architect and Kline, Leach and Owens of Menorrhagia. I’ve never heard Menorrhagia, but MotA are one of my favorite doom bands of recent memory, so let’s get the comparisons out of the way; well…there really aren’t any.

Yes, Struck By Lightning has virtually no sonic relation to Lahm’s previous stuff with MotA, so fuck that. It’s far more aggressive, has almost no focus on the drifting, meditative doom that Mouth spat out, and would be more comfortable on a live show lineup with Black Tusk and Mastodon than Cult of Luna or Rosetta. These guys pretty much rip into all of the tracks with the same unyielding intensity, alongside a heavy emphasis on post-hardcore rhythms, rainforests of pummeling toms, and the best use of the word fuck in lyrics  this year, “Mindfucker.” That one is a doozy on its own, making me fist pump at my desk harder than anything since the last Tragedy record. Sweet, sweet goodness to soothe that sunburnt soul as we head into the hotter months down here in America’s peen. Pick this up and prepare to thrash. Avoid if you feel betrayed by Lahm no longer being willing to swim in the arctic sludge ocean.

Out this month on Translation Loss Records!

Swamp Abyss Sorcery – A Guide to Floridian Metal Circa 2012 by orlandooom407

I sincerely apologize for the lack of updates over the past few days. Combined with sending this grotesque chimeric bastard’s likeness to many of the blogs and forums that I frequent I’ve been heavily preoccupied by life, Fire in the Cave writing sessions and other writing projects. His name is THROMBIBULOUS and he exemplifies what happens when Rick Scott reveals his true form, except well, his flamingo penis is probably significantly smaller. He’s the newest mascot for several of us Florida people who decided to compile our songs together for this FREE COMPILATION entitled Swamp Abyss Sorcery. Satanik Recordings and HOT GRAVES compiled and released this free digital compilation on Valentine’s Day equipped with lore and artwork by Jean Saiz:

To help consolidate all necessary free time for the sake of enjoying the music I’m going to provide a series of one sentence matter of fact explanations of each band:

Miami:

Shroud EaterA  malevolent and equivocally dissonant stoner metal trio armed with a PhD in savagery.

Holly Hunt - Armageddon flavored instrumental drone doom duo with an enamoring gazey trim.

Orbweaver – Deranged psychedelic death metal hurdling through space at speeds that make The Milennium Falcon look like your little sister’s moped.

Orlando:

Druid Lord – Tomb smashing death-doom quartet smelt together by ancient witchery and venomous rhythms.

Fire in the CaveI don’t critique my own band. Grim Kim Kelly did though.

Tampa / St.Petersburg:

flyingsnakes -Explosive blackened crust that eviscerates boundaries between metallic and anarchic.

FatalUnabashed thrash that will trash your entire hash stash to fuel their toxic lashed dash.

Party Time – Hyper active hardcore punk in less than two minutes or your punishment’s free.

Jacksonville / Gainesville:

Hollow Leg – Ravenous Floridian cult classic doom quartet that’ll have you saying “WHAT?!” for days.

Extremely Rotten – Red herring gore grind brutality with vocal tones so low that if plumbers had spidey sense it would violently tingle against the subconscious.

HOT GRAVES – Menacing blackened thrash burning a glorious Midnight inspired homage straight through your mind’s eye.

Rise Above Tattoo Grand Opening Show Tomorrow on Mills Ave! by orlandooom407

Tattooist Scott White and his associates are having the grand opening of their new shop, RISE ABOVE TATTOO, located at 1009 Mills Avenue in Orlando this Saturday. Rise Above went ahead and setup an impressive buffet of punk, grind and metal to help bolster support. AXIS, Cannabass, Dissident Aggressor and Abuse were more than enough to sell me on throwing away my Saturday for drinking, head banging and more than likely an impulsive abstract tattoo. Or maybe a panda riding a motorcycle.

Bear in mind there are two separate locations for musical performances. Wally’s will host the punk platform of Orlando’s own Wet Nurse, Teenage Softies, Thee Wilt Chamberlain and Odd Movers starting at 7pm. Gear grinding riffs will commence at Uncle Lou’s located directly across from Wally’s at 9pm and will also include Feral Babies and Knifehits in addition to the bands mentioned above.

See you Orlandummies tomorrow!

Dissident Aggressor (Blackened Thrash Metal)
It’s good to see thrash alive and well in the Orlando scene, rarely do I hear a band that has me banging my head from start to finish. With their dirty thrash sound Dissident Aggressor hits hard and leaves you wanting more. I’m excited to see how the intensity of the records is translated live.

Check out their debut on their Bandcamp page.

Swamp Ruins (Doomgrind)
I got a chance to check Swamp Ruins out at their first gig about a month ago. This two-piece lays down such a heavy sound its hard not to be captivated and feel like your knee deep in muck.

Orlando Metal Awards Voting Begins! by orlandooom407

Big props to Orlandooom’s own Keith Carlson for this exceptionally classy logo.  So, the Orlando Metal Awards have come again in October as usual. Since our inception at the beginning of this year all of the dedicated individuals that contribute to Orlandooom shows, blog posts, promotions, parties or what have you have been a family to me. Granted, as Tim of Hollow Leg put it, that family appears to be  “a bunch of satanic alcoholics” seen through the eyes of any average Joe who’s never heard a metal band that wasn’t Slipknot or Metallica’s Black Album.

Now, I’m asking our readers, friends, and supporters to help us leave a foot print on the scene we’ve all work so hard to build and nourish. Below you’ll find a list of my  nominations for Orlando’s Best  Metal Bands and Individual Musicians. I’m going to post every single band that’s been gracious enough to be part of one of our shows. My individual list, however, will only be my personal nominations for each category.

Dissident Aggressor Joins Our Artist Roster! by orlandooom407
July 25, 2011, 8:54 pm

While these brand new thrashers have yet to been photographed together they did provide me with this deliciously retro logo. These caustically wild metal fanatics have also just made their debut release available on, where else, bandcamp!

Check out their music, FOR FREE, at this link: http://dissidentaggressor.bandcamp.com/

Here’s some bio information below:

“After rising to fame with the hit “Throbbing Rod”, Dissident Aggressor got caught up on the roller coaster of fame. After John Farran was convicted of manslaughter for exploding a man’s head with a 20 foot speaker and sentenced to 12 years in prison 2005, the band seemed to be over. But Satan would not allow it. He chose now to be the time for the antichrist to rise and save Dissident Aggressor. …A charismatic politician was the perfect cover, and Satan’s son easily won the presidency. Barack Obama’s first official act as president was to pardon John, and with many years in prison as inspiration, John had a plethora of explosively brutal songs. With Taylor Leamy’s depressingly pathetic life to draw from, he too was easily able to write lyrics for songs. But Jake Ettison’s old life as a pirate was still haunting him, and he sank deeper into the lifestyle of flying blimps and hanging out with Charlie Sheen. It was a very dark time for the drummer of Dissident Aggressor. But from the ashes, rose a phoenix. While on one of his week long coke binge/blimp flights (Jake was known to stay in the air for up to a week at a time with nothing but cocaine and drums wearing only a loincloth), he began writing drum tracks to the songs that were written. The completed songs sounded so good that Jake was cured of his cocaine addiction. After being put on the cover of Time magazine for finding a cure for drug addiction, Dissident Aggressor released their album Agonizing Demise on their own, simply burning copies of it on blank cd r’s. Rolling Stone calls it ‘so innovative’ and ‘the most creative thing since putting parental advisory labels as the cover of your album to look explicit’. They were ‘tired of dealing with the record companies and everyone loving you and having such big dicks.’ So today Dissident Aggressor is getting back to it’s roots, only choosing to play in smaller venues instead of the stadiums they could still easily fill. “Who knows what’s in store for Dissident Aggressor next?”, John said in an interview recently. “I just know that after we recieved the award for being the best band ever, I realized that kicking ass all of the time isn’t everything.. You have to fuck bitches sometimes too, ya know?”
Too true. Check ‘em out!
